This warm transitional kitchen in Montclair, New Jersey was designed to balance classic architectural elements with a more relaxed, modern sensibility. The goal was to create a space that feels timeless and inviting, while still reflecting a refined and updated approach to everyday living.
The design is anchored by custom cabinetry with subtle detailing, offering a more traditional foundation while maintaining clean, tailored lines. A soft, layered palette was selected to bring warmth into the space—combining painted finishes with natural wood tones to create depth and visual interest without overwhelming the room.
Materiality played a central role in shaping the overall feel of the kitchen. Stone surfaces introduce a sense of permanence and elegance, while textured elements such as wood and linen soften the composition and make the space feel approachable. The result is a kitchen that feels balanced, cohesive, and quietly sophisticated.
Particular attention was given to proportion and layout, ensuring the kitchen functions seamlessly for both daily use and more social moments. The space was designed to feel open yet grounded, with each element thoughtfully considered in relation to the whole.
Lighting was layered to enhance both functionality and atmosphere, with a mix of ambient and decorative fixtures that complement the transitional character of the design.
As with all of our projects, the design reflects the way the client lives—creating a kitchen that feels natural, comfortable, and enduring.
