This living and family room design in Montclair, New Jersey reflects a layered, eclectic approach—bringing together elements from different periods to create a space that feels both curated and deeply personal. The goal was to balance old and new, allowing each piece to contribute to a cohesive and refined overall composition.
Working within the character of the home, we embraced its architectural details while introducing more contemporary elements to create contrast and visual interest. The result is a space that feels grounded in its setting while still feeling current and expressive.
The layout was designed to accommodate both everyday living and more relaxed gathering, with distinct zones that flow naturally into one another. A mix of upholstered seating and vintage or sculptural pieces creates a dynamic composition, allowing the room to feel collected rather than overly designed.
Materiality plays a central role in the space. Rich textures—such as wood, linen, and woven elements—are layered with more tailored finishes to create depth and balance. The palette moves between softer neutrals and more expressive tones, adding dimension while maintaining a sense of cohesion.
Lighting was approached as both functional and atmospheric, highlighting key areas of the room while enhancing the overall warmth of the space. Each element was selected to complement the eclectic nature of the design without overwhelming it.
As with all of our projects, the design reflects the way the client lives—resulting in a living and family space that feels natural, inviting, and enduring.
